I have, as I love to say, danced pretty much all my life. Ballet, Stage, Jazz, Argentine tango, 5Rhythms, among other styles. But my explanations for why I do this have also evolved as time has passed.
The answers I come up with are still worth reflecting on: I do it because I love to do it. I do it because I have to. I do it because it’s great exercise for my body. I do it because it’s great exercise for my mind. I do it because I love to improvise… and improvised, as opposed to choreographed, dance is what turns me on. Because it’s a channel for my creativity. Because it’s a channel for my sensuality. Because it’s a challenge. Because it enables me to express who I am. Because it enables me to explore who I am. Right now. Without restraint. Well, with as little restraint as is possible for me… right now.
I feel like I’m getting closer!
But let’s stay with the question for a while instead of rushing on to the answer.
We live in a world that is obsessed by words and numbers. We use them to communicate. And to accumulate knowledge, sometimes even wisdom, and to communicate that too. To new generations of people. Who understand just those words and numbers. Who agree on our definitions. And “there’s the rub”. The whole business is dependent on agreement, or at least apparent agreement, between people. On the boiling point of water. On what ideology or god as best. On who is most right!
Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s great. And lots of things of great value to us need this to work. But it’s not the only game in town.
Fortunately for us there is another way. The way of wordless communication. Music, dance, symbols, body language, atmosphere, the look in someone’s eyes. We sometimes call it art and it has been there since the beginning of time. What makes it different is that it does not require rationality. It does not require agreement. It goes directly from… oh, call it what you like, you know what I mean! It doesn’t care if I’m right. It only cares if I’m inspired, or if I inspire. If a thought or feeling, or whatever you want to call it, arises that otherwise wouldn’t have arisen. And that is what makes each of us unique. That’s why wise people through the ages have said “If you don’t do it no one ever will”.
And that, my friend, is why I dance.
